Green Products
Safe for you and safe for the environment.
We want to ensure that how our natural personal care products are made and packaged lives up to the highest standards of responsibility to our consumers and the environment. It's part of The Greater Good, a pledge we've made that we will do the right thing when it comes to our products, our environment and our fellow living creatures. As part of this pledge, we have set a goal that by 2020, all our product formulas will be 100% natural and packaging will be 100% PCR/Biodegradable.
Safe Cosmetics Agreement

Burt's Bees has partnered with the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics to curb the manufacture and distribution of unsafe cosmetics. Joining over 150 companies pledging to avoid chemicals known or strongly suspected of causing cancer, mutation or birth defects, Burt's Bees has also pledged to help other companies implement plans to replace hazardous materials with safer alternatives.
Formulas
At Burt's Bees, we believe that the best solutions for our consumers come from proven, time-tested recipes from nature and we pride ourselves on using the most natural, safe and effective ingredients with the simplest processes. From the beginning, we held off on creating products until the technology was available to make it naturally. For example, we held off for years to create a product with water because a natural preservative system wasn't yet available.
We choose not to use potentially harmful chemicals such as parabens, sodium laurel sulfate and petroleum derived fillers (which are non-renewable resources). Instead, we use ingredients that are found in nature and are just as effective such as essential and botanical oils, plant extracts, herbs and beeswax.
We also list the percent natural on every product label — we call it our "natural bar" — it discloses the impressively high amount of natural ingredients being used. Our products average 99% natural, with half our products being 100% natural. We will continue to strive for 100% natural on all our products, investigating all ingredients and latest technologies to create the best products.
Packaging Direction
The packaged goods industry is notorious for generating mountains of waste. Burt's Bees combats this through innovative and responsible manufacturing methods, recycled/reusable packaging, and pro-active measures to reduce our impact on the environment. Before Burt's Bees launched our famous Beeswax Lip Balm in a plastic tube, it took years to find a vendor that could manufacture recycled plastic for the tube packaging. Our aim is to make packaging minimal and to only use packaging materials that are highly recycled and recyclable.

As a member of the Sustainable Packaging Coalition, we are always looking for innovations in packaging technology. We recently started using biodegradable labels with some of our new products. Zero waste is part of our 2020 goals and we continue to increase the amount of recycled content in our tubes and bottles.
