Establishing a good skin care routine is important to keep skin looking and feeling healthy. But, did you know that the order of your skin care routine matters? Come along to learn exactly how to layer so you get the most out of your skin care.
How to layer skin care
The easiest rule of thumb is to layer based on consistency with the lightest-weight or most water based skin care products going on first, and the heaviest or thickest last. When you’re working with a growing routine, you may need a little extra direction.
Let’s break it down:
The Best Way to Layer Your Skin Care Products
1) Cleansers
Start the day off with a clean slate. It can help your products absorb better, too.
Use this much: A nickel-sized amount

2) Toners
Damp skin is more absorbent to the ingredients and acts like a sponge, so toners help prep your skin to soak up all the ingredients that come next.
Use this much: 3-4 drops

If you’re using any sort of spot treatment, now’s the time to add it in so it has the most impact.
Use this much: A pea-sized amount

4) Serums
Serums contain the most concentrated ingredients in your routine, so you want those active ingredients to penetrate your skin.
Use this much: A pea-sized amount

5) Eye Creams
Formulated for the delicate eye area, you only need a teeny tiny amount to see the benefits. The skin is thinner around your eyes, so remember to tap gently and never tug.
Use this much: A pea-sized amount, split between each eye

6) Moisturizers
Moisturizers improve skin barrier function and increase hydration. Since they come in all different forms like lotions, gel creams and night creams, there’s something for all skin types.
Use this much: A blueberry-sized amount

7) SPF
If it’s daytime, SPF is a given. 365/24/7. We’re big fans of the mineral kind, which acts like a shield against UV rays. It should get applied close to the end of your routine.
Use this much: A teaspoon for your face, neck, and décolletage

Extra Credit Skin Care
Wondering about products you don’t use every day like face masks or face scrubs? You can swap out a nickel-sized amount of your face scrub in place of your cleanser and apply a quarter-sized amount of your face mask right after cleansing. After you remove your mask, you can jump to step two of your regular routine.
How do I know if my skin care ingredients work together?
You want your skin care to do the most, we get it. Some ingredients don’t play well together (looking at you Vitamin C and Retinol), so it’s important to pay attention to what’s on the labels.
Here are a few things to look for before you layer up.
Do I Need to Use All These Skin Care Products?
No, not at all! Skin care routines are personal, and if a more-paired down approach works best for you, then go ahead and listen to what your skin needs. You can use this as a guideline to figure out where products should live in your routine, and how to incorporate something new that you want to try.
No matter how many skin care products are in your routine, making sure you use them in the right order means you see the most benefits and keep your skin looking and feeling healthy for the long run.
