Dallas-based dermatologist Dr. DiAnne Davis shares the top advice on how to properly care for acne-prone skin across all skin types. Let’s dive in.
HOW SHOULD YOU CARE FOR ACNE-PRONE SKIN?
Many things can lead to breakouts, including an imbalance in the skin microbiome. You want to make sure that you are using a comprehensive skin care regimen that targets different components of acne-prone skin.
Breakouts start with clogged pores, so incorporating a gentle exfoliating cleanser to address this breakout trigger like Clear & Balance Breakout Defense Foaming Wash is a great first step. It’s also important to replenish moisture even for those with acne-prone skin, who sometimes tend to shy away from moisturizing products.
You can also incorporate an exfoliant, like Clear & Balanced Deep Cleansing Acne Scrub with Salicylic Acid, a few times per week to help clear pore buildup and remove dead skin cells.
The best moisturizer for dry, acne-prone skin is one that won’t clog pores. Ingredients like salicylic acid can be drying on the skin, so finding a moisturizer that won’t clog pores and helps with dryness is important. The Clear & Balanced Skin Balancing Gel Cream is a non-comedogenic, lightweight gel cream formulated with squalane and prebiotic inulin designed to support breakout-prone skin. It replenishes moisture without setting off breakout triggers.
WHAT ARE TOP INGREDIENTS FOR TREATING BLEMISHES AND ACNE?
Salicylic acid has long been a favorite for treating blemishes - ours comes in the form of willow bark extract. It’s a Beta-Hydroxy Acid (BHA) known to be less irritating than other stronger acids. Its purpose is to gently exfoliate the skin and unclog the pores. It promotes cell turnover through exfoliation and has antibacterial properties.
Another ingredient is cica. It’s a botanical extract that has soothing properties, along with antibacterial properties. Tigers roll around in cica to help heal their wounds in the wild, earning it the nickname tiger grass.
You should also look for squalane, which helps to hydrate the skin and has antioxidant properties to help defend against free radicals.

DO YOU HAVE ANY ACNE SKIN CARE TIPS?
These general tips are for everyone:
Cleanse your face twice daily
Use non-comedogenic products (formulated to not clog pores)
Always use a moisturizer
Do not pick at breakouts
Make sure that you are using effective products that are not too harsh on the skin. People can feel the need to use 10-12 active ingredients to get their blemishes and breakouts under control. That can do more harm than good. (If you need help building your routine, check out these posts for teenage acne or hormonal acne.)
As someone of color who previously had acne, what was probably more frustrating than the breakouts themselves were the marks that were left behind. The Clear & Balanced Post Acne Mark Cream incorporates a unique blend of skin-soothing botanicals to support an even skin tone and boost radiance.
If you’ve already picked at your breakout, here are few helpful tips to help prevent acne scarring.
